This hard-to-find antique 1890 Remington Standard No. 2 typewriter is an amazing sight. The Remington 2 was an upstrike machine, with the type hanging down in a circle in the type basket (pic. 4). On hitting a key, the type would swing up against the platen and leave an impression of the letter on the paper. The typist would have to lift the carriage to see what was written. This machine has a very steampunk look to it. It has glass keys and has many wooden parts, including the space bar, roller and arms that connect to the keys. Above the carriage are the following words: "Keep the machine free from dust. Clean all of the top rods -- especially the shifting rod -- with a greasy cloth every day" I doubt that this has happened every day since 1890. Also, in regards to this model, the words in the little red burst say "To Save Time is to Lengthen Life"

According to machinesoflovinggrace.com this model was a dramatic departure from the No.1. In shape and size; it more closely resembled what we think of as a "modern" typewriter. It had 39 keys and is historically important as being the first typewriter to be able to type in both upper and lower case letters from the same key. It could type a 6 1/2" line. This site also had a copy of the original manual, which was very exciting to see: http://machinesoflovinggrace.com/manuals/manual-Remington2.pdf

This particular 1890 machine is in very rustic condition (as shown in the pictures). It is missing the "Y" key and the "lower case" key. The keys work and the carriage advances. There is no ribbon, although because of its age I would probably want to take it easy on this big guy. The carriage is an 8" carriage and the machine measures approximately 16"x 16" x 12" and weighs 26 lbs. This would be a great display piece for a store or home with vintage decor. Plus, it would be a great restoration project for the ultimate typewriter collector!
