Chawan Teabowl - Exceptional

Every year there is one piece that you create that is the absolute best you can produce in the year. You may fire seven or eight times or more in a year and this one piece is objectively the best that you can produce from all those firings.

This chawan is THE exceptional piece for my firing years of 2010 and 2011.

It is unique in balance, visual quality, feel and spirit.

The bowl was fired in December, 2011 in a reduction atmosphere with volitile soda introduced into the atmosphere though ports in the kiln wall. The soda was added multiple times for a half an hour at peak temperature of 2350*. The soda spins through the kiln with the super heated air from the burners and attaches to the clay of the pots in its path.

After the introduction of the soda, the kiln was soaked the crash cooled to create, then limit the growth of teadust crystals in the tenmoku interior.

The Chawan measures 4" in diameter and 3" in height. It is intended for mixing matcha, although you can use any tea you desire.
