Engraved Black Pocket Watch Necklace with 27" ornate black soldiered chain with lobster clasp.

Like a perfect estate find this fine engraved black antique style roman mechanical pocket watch necklace has precision engineered mechanical jeweled movement, see-through front and rear case to allow viewing of the entire movement and back and forth rotation of the balance wheel as the watch runs.

Top cover flips open with the press of the winding button to view the black face dial with gold Roman numerals. This is a mechanical style watch that keeps accurate time and will need to be wound but does not require batteries. Pocket watch pendant measures 1.75 inches. I have made the ornate necklace chain 27" with a lobster clasp using soldiered black steel chain for strength and beauty.

Setting the time
You will need to grasp the crown (button at the top) tightly and pull pretty hard. When you hear a click you will be able to turn the crown/button to set the time. Once you have set the time you will need to press the button firmly back towards the watch until you feel or hear a click.

Winding your pocket watch
You may wind your watch fully every day of use. Turn the winding crown (same button you set the time with) clockwise approximately 15 turns. Stop before you feel resistance so the mainspring will not get over wound. The mainspring is made to wind up all the way once a day. Once you finish winding the watch you will need to rock the watch back and forth to activate it. Most watches will run 26-30 hours on a full winding, but there can be exceptions.

* There are two reasons often given for this tradition. The first (and likely apocryphal) is that "IV" is a representation for "Ivpiter", or Jupiter, the supreme Roman god, and that people were afraid to invoke his name on timepieces.

The real reason is aesthetics: watchmakers want to keep an approximate vertical symmetry in symbol width, and "IIII" is at better parity with "VIII" than "IV".

As for "correctness" of IV versus IIII, Roman numerals weren't standardized until long after the ancient Romans. Use of forms like "IIII" and "IIX" (for 8) and "IC" (for 99) was fairly common and, at times, preferred. It's a m
Locate the mainspring. It is between the '10' and the face center on a pocket watch, and between the "1" and the face center on a wrist watch. When loose the coils are relaxed into their outer area. At about 10 twists you will still see space between the coils. At 15 twists or less it is fully wound but you need to STOP while you can see slight space in the coil and before you feel resistance, so that the mainspring will not become frozen due to winding it too tight. When over wound the mainspring is in a tight knot at its center. Sometimes you can get an over wound watch to loosen up by giving it several good shakes. You grasp the watch firmly (so as not to drop it) and 'snap' it several times.
