Perfect for Halloween or anyone who loves black cats and witchy decorations!

In the ancient world, Egyptians worshiped a cat goddess named Bast, or Bastet. As both the goddess of protection and cats, she was often depicted as a black cat.

Scots believed that a black cat’s arrival in a house signified prosperity for those residing there. And in 17th-century England, King Charles I attributed his good luck to his ebony pet.

In Britain and Japan, black cats are signs of good luck. Many people there believe that a woman who owns a black cat will have many suitors — so it’s perfectly fine to be a crazy cat lady as long as those cats are dark in color.

Sailors historically have revered black cats. If sailors needed a cat on their ship to hunt mice, they preferred it to be black, for good luck.

When Puritans settled in America, their faith associated black cats with witches. Many thought these cats were the witches’ familiars, or supernatural helpers. It was believed that a witch could transform into feline form only nine times (hence the superstition of cats having nine lives).

I'm inspired by spiritual imagery and historical references to the mysteries of the animal symbolism. I hope you enjoy this wall or door hanging as much as I do!

Hand-painted details and wood vary, but I will do my best to match in the picture. Brass hardware is nickel free.
