ALICE LOOKING OVER THE SEA – CHARMING BOOKPLATE FROM 1881 EDITION OF CHATTERBOX

Young Alice sits at her window and gazes out over the sea dreaming of adventures in travel. A sailboat lies moored along the coast. The reverse of the page bears a poem by M H F Donne bearing the same title and talks of Alice’s hopes to travel the world and see Niagara’s Falls, forests, lakes canoes and otters, Molucca isles birds of paradise, etc “But here I must stay and read my book, and think and wonder and wish and look. Far over the changing sea”.

I don’t know if you call this a bookplate, an etching, an engraving, a lithograph – but I will call it beautiful. I am not one to take apart a book but this 1881 edition of Chatterbox was beyond hope in terms of keeping it together. Rather I thought I would offer some of the finer prints removed carefully from the book.

The page itself measures 7” x 9 ½ with the image itself being approximately 5 3/4” x 7” making it a perfect size to be framed and displayed. Truly a charming piece and wouldn’t it make a lovely gift for that Alice in your life or perhaps a traveler?.
