This is a great old, but undated Altemus publication of Charles and Mary Lamb's Tales From Shakespeare - likely late 1800s to 1901. Green cloth covers, illustrated with pretty pictoral spine. Cloth rubbed at spine edges and cover corners, and two holes in the cloth on the front where the cover joins the spine. A bit of light spotting to the covers, but pages remarkably clean and tight, slightly tanning. Only the title page has spotting, the rest do not. No writing. Frontispiece illustration is in color, many other illustrations in black and white. 192 pages of text plus quite a number of pages of advertisements for other Altemus books. One of the advertising pages has a tear at the top. The book measures 5 1/4" x 6 3/4". It would make a lovely gift!
Brother-and-sister writing team Charles and Mary Lamb interweave the words of Shakespeare with their own to bring 9 of his best plays to the young reader. Romeo and Juliet, King Lear, Othello, Macbeth, The Merchant of Venice, Hamlet, A Midsummer Night's Dream, The Tempest, The Taming of the Shrew. Charming introduction to Shakespeare (much better than CliffsNotes) and a great addition to your antique book collection.
