Outstanding 1900s 1910s black silk mourning dress & hat set! The dress is marvelous featuring many intricate & impressive details. The neckline is designed with cream floral net lace trimmed in black silk soutache with ruffled silk on each side where it meets the silk overlay featuring connected embroidered roses on netting that extend partly down the bodice and into a V in the back. Below the cream net lace is an embroidered net panel in wheat, green, blue & apricot with five silk tassels extending down!
The silk overlay is also trimmed in the elaborate embroidered roses net lace and it curves up over the tops of the shoulders and toward the center back. The full length sleeves feature the embroidered net lace roses design at the hem and also have an additional 6 tiered silk over layer, hitting just above the elbow, featuring two embroidered roses on the last tier. The sleeve hem has five eye/hook closures.
The waist is defined with a layered silk band that comes together in the front with three hidden eye/hooks and is also embellished with the embroidered roses with faceted black beads in the centers! The skirt features two long vertical strands of the embroidered roses net lace, on each side of the front and back, extending to the hem with more of the embroidery between the sides along the hem!
The dress closes with many eye/hooks & loops from the skirt, to the bodice and back around the cream lace of the neckline. The bust has a partially boned thin cotton built-in corset-like under closure.
Dress Condition: Excellent mint condition! The built-in corset-like under closure of bust a little discoloration.
Dress Size: Bust measures 37” around. Waist measures approximately 32” around. Hips are free up to 54” around. Sleeves measure approx. 26.5” from shoulder seam. Shoulder seam across measures approx. 15.5”. From top shoulder to hem, dress measures approx. 54.5” in length.
The silk hat is styled somewhat like a turbin with a slightly gathered rim and pouch. The right side features what appears to be a gathered bow with a ‘wing’ extending back. The ‘wing’ has a wire inside to keep the shape. A gorgeous deep bluish/purple brocade with gold metallic thread circles the base of the crown before the pouch. The inside of hat reads “Burdick & Murray Co. Millinery Dept. Madison WIS”. Burdick & Murray Co. was established in 1897 as a fashionable women’s boutique.
Hat Condition: Near excellent! 1 small hole to silk near base of pouched crown. The brocade piece has loose edges – not sure if meant that way or not.
Hat Size: Circumference measures approx. 20.5” around.
