Violaceae, VIOLET
This print shows a yellow and purple flower but apparently there are over 900 variations.

Delightful and unusual antique botanical print illustrated by MR W. H. Fitch (1817-1892)
PREPARED FOR THE SCIENCE AND ART DEPARTMENT OF THE COUNCIL OF EDUCATION
Published by Chapman and Hall in 1874.

THERE ARE TWO VARIATIONS OF THIS LOVELY PRINT AS FOLLOWS:
PRINT VARIATION 1: Hand-coloured.
The prints vary in condition. There is no foxing (brown spots) but most plates are slightly yellowed. Some have grubby marks and a little edge-tanning. However, considering they are nearly 140 years old, they are in good condition. Some have small binding holes to the left whilst others are slightly ragged. A few are pasted to a thin strip of paper. This print has an embossed library stamp reading:"Hammersmith Public Librairies".
PRINT VARIATION 2: Black and white.
These prints have interesting library marks which add to the character. The little purple stamp reads 'York Library' and the embossed stamp reads 'City of York Public Library'.
BOTH SETS OF PRINTS are blank on the reverse. There are some pages which have been printed with small or no margins, the printing being run to the edge of the paper. They would need to be matted carefully before framing.

Paper size: 24 x 18 cm OR 9 x 7 inches, approximately.

Your print will be placed inside a polythene bag, packed securely in a cardboard-backed envelope with extra card/paper, and posted via airmail if overseas. All prints, whether antique, vintage or modern should be protected from exposure to direct sunlight.

Walter Hood Fitch was one of the world's most prolific botanical artists and probably produced these drawings whilst working at Kew Gardens. He was the sole artist for Curtis's Botanical Magazine for over 40 years. The drawings are utterly charming and were originally produced as sheets for use in museums and classrooms.
