Beautifully detailed and coloured lithograph of the red-pied pouter pigeon.

The Pouter pigeons are domesticated varieties of the rock pigeon (Columba livia), characterized by a very large, inflatable crop. They are kept as ornamental or fancy breeds, valued for their unusual appearance. There are many varieties of pouter with little in common except for the nature of the crop. The origin of the breed is unknown, but Pouters have been bred in Europe for at least 400 years.

The size of the print: 10,6" x 8,1" (26,8 x 20,5 cm) including its border.
Printed in London, circa 1880 by Cassell & Company Ltd. for "The Illustrated Book of Pigeons" by Robert Fulton.

The print is in good condition, the paper shows its age with creamy patina, perfect for framing.

Concerning the age of the paper - cca. 130 years - some spots can be occured on the margin and the reverse side, but these do not effect the quality of the lithograph itself as it can be seen on the scan.

Please note, that by antique prints due to their age some imperfections are to be expected.
