Here is a 5 mm Kingman Turquoise and sterling silver earring with a sterling silver post.

This earring was handmade in the USA by Jewelry designer Jim Saunders. For many years in the late 1970s Jim owned and operated a jewelry manufacturing business in Albuquerque, NM. His work began with handmade silver and turquoise jewelry with turquoise cabs he cut himself. The local demand for Jim's turquoise cutting and setting ability grew into one of the largest volume cabochon cutting shops in the United States. At its peak could cut will into 100,000 cabs per month. During this time Jim was exposed to ultrasonic drills and took them to develop ultrasonic inlay stone cutting. This became the largest ultrasonic cutting operation in the country cutting well into 2,000 stones per day.

One of his customers for this precise stone cutting was Kenneth Reid. Reid's brass buckles with an inlay-ed face using different colors of wood on a sky mountain scene utilized Jim's inlay stones as the sun, moon, or planets. Ken Reid buckles have become collectible and show up on ebay all the time. Bostock Buckles of El Paso, TX, has also used these stones for inlay in their production of commemorative buckles. There have been several other companies to use these specialty cut stones throughout the years.

Jim took this development and started to make his own inlay earrings with it. These earrings were featured in Sears and Roebucks stores nationally. Jim developed an assembly line approach for production of these earrings. He would first cut the stones in his shop, and then hire different groups of trained workers in and around the Albuquerque area to implement the rest of the steps. This included everything from soldering, to gluing the stone onto a dop stick and grinding.

A lot of these people were college students performing the work in their dorm rooms. He paid them by the piece and by the step, so a well trained hard worker could make almost $20 per hour. In the late 1970s that was quite a paycheck. So all of the sweat shop stories of piece work taking advantage of people was blown way out of proportion by politicians, media, and celebrities. Although Jim Saunders was not from the Fred Harvey Era, he is an unsung icon from a very unique era in the history of American jewelry manufacturers.

This earring is brand new from the old stock made back in the 1970s. Made by this modern day Henry Ford of the jewelry business, these earrings were left over from one of his last orders and forgotten about on a dusty shelf until now, so when they're gone, they're gone.

Each earring comes on its own card and is personally signed by Jim. The entire earring and post is made from sterling silver. The earnut is made from stainless (surgical) steel. The turquoise is cut from Kingman turquoise and is stabilized. The size of the earring is 5mm or about 3 1/6 inch.

The picture you see is of one pair I picked at random. While the entire lot looks very close as a total lot, each pair is slighty different as turquoise changes its look with each stone..even the two stone's picked for a pair may be slightly different..That is the beauty of turquoise..!!!! Turquoise is a nature made stone and not plastic...do not expect perfection from nature.
The pair you receive will look slightly different than the picture. You receive an individual pair picked just for you. no two are exactly the same..
