Jim Saunders is one of the original silversmiths from the 1970's turquoise jewelry boom based in Albuquerque, NM. While all of his fellow jewelry makers from that era went on to other ventures, Jim stayed true to his first love, jewelry making. He persevered through the jewelry crash and never quit. His work at an early age was sold in retail stores nationwide including Sears and Roebuck, JC Pennys, and many others. He later became involved with QVC and the Home Shopping Network. His personal work and designs were cutting edge for the time. During this period he developed one of the largest volume stone cutting operations in the United States, and pioneering ultrasonic stone cutting.
Most of Jim's designs were centered around turquoise, variscite, variquoise, sugilite, Italian red coral, mother of pearl, malachite, lapis, opal, among others. He developed many innovative cutting techniques and design elements during this period. His love of cutting his own stones was pertinent to his designs and enabled a very competitive edge to his work. Jim's silver jewelry flourished until the Hunt brothers drove the price of silver to over $50.00 an ounce in the late 1970's. This led Jim to develop several fashion jewelry lines using alternative metals to silver such as titanium and copper. His fashion jewelry circled the globe with customers worldwide in galleries and tourist destinations. Jim was constantly looking for new materials and colors to build jewelry with.
Jim has never left his roots and always pushes himself as a silversmith, stone cutter, and lapidary artist. Jim has displayed in over 50 galleries at a time, and was one of the top selling artists at several. He is always pushing himself to develop new jewelry making techniques, new stone sources, and cutting edge designs that push his ability. He has designed for several celebrities and is mentioned as the silversmith in their credits.
On a sales trip several years ago, Jim was robbed and severely injured. It was one of the greatest challenges of his life to come back from and resume his work. The doctor's prognosis was grim and he was told he could not resume normal life again, but his personal drive and ambition pushed him beyond their expectations. He started by selling his stones on ebay and has been pushing himself for many years now to get back to his first love, silver and stone jewelry. He has worked very hard to regain the skill and dexterity needed to resume his jewelry making career. He has collected old vintage tools for over forty years to fabricate his unique jewelry, including hammers, stakes, ,jigs, and custom built stamps. He owns several gem stone mines which makes his jewelry that much more unique.
Jim's awesome forty year knowledge base along with his unique stones, tools, and jewelry making techniques make his work extremely rare and valuable. He personally makes every piece himself, and prides himself on using heavy gage silver and properly set stones. He doesn't cut corners, even with the elevated price of silver in today's world. Jim is a one of a kind artist and greatly accomplished in his ability to make quality unique jewelry that will last for years to come.
