Small pair of antique picture frames, handmade and chip carved. Early 20th century folk art. Each frame is made from one piece of wood, with no joined corners. Very nice to find a matching pair.

From northern Minnesota, so most likely made by someone of Scandinavian, Germanic, or Bohemian heritage.

Because these are handmade, they vary slightly in dimension.

Height: 7" (17.78 cm)
Full Width: 4 1/4" (10.795 cm)
Thickness: just under 3/8" (0.9525 cm)
Width of Each Frame Side: About 1" (2.54 cm)

Picture Front Opening Width Varies: 2 1/8" to 2 3/16" (5.3975 cm to 5.55625 cm))
Picture Front Opening Height Varies: 3 7/16" to 3 9/16" (8.73125 cm to 9.04875 cm))

Back Opening: H 4 1/4" x W 2 1/2" (H 10.795 cm x W 6.35 cm))
Picture Ledge on Side Edges: 3/16" (0.47625 cm)
Picture Ledge at Top Edges: 1/4" (0.635 cm)
Picture Ledge on Bottom Edges: Almost 1/2" (1.27 cm)

The frames are in good condition for their age, with an old, probably original, surface. Their stained and varnished surfaces have some sheen. Areas that appear sort of grey in the photos are actually the surfaces reflecting light. And frames seem slightly darker in person than they appear in the photos.

Surfaces of top and bottom edges of frames were left somewhat rough when made, Side edges are smooth. Several of the nails used to secure a backing on the frames created small holes when they went through to the front surface. These don't show unless held up to the light, since the carving is so intricate. Top two nails on the frame shown without paper backing do come through slighlty to the front surface, but are more easily noticed by feel than by sight.
