This handmade cup is inspired by the Japanese pottery style of kurinuki, meaning "carved out." Its rocky texture is a reminder of nature when held in your hands or viewed on display. This one-of-a-kind piece would make a great gift for someone special, and that includes yourself!

I make all of my pieces in my home studio located in Portland, Oregon. This piece is constructed from a red clay which starts off as a 25 pound block. I portion out the clay into smaller amounts and form them into rough cylinders. Typically I will start by carving the inside of the piece with a loop tool. After letting the clay dry a bit, I will then start forming the outside surface with a wire tool. Lastly I will refine the inner surface to remove any extra material. After carving is completed the piece is thoroughly dried before firing to cone 04. Then the piece is glazed and fired again to cone 6.

This piece is dishwasher and microwave safe, and is glazed with non-toxic, food-safe, lead-free glazes.
