Vintage shabby but chic metal book stand from the 1930s, manufactured by Ponten, Berkeley, California. The earliest advertising article I found on this particular reading stand is from 1930 in the Berkeley Gazette newspaper which reads in part. "....Put a book or magazine in just the position you prefer. The stand is easily adjustable and can be folded flat to hold a serving tray for meals in bed. Made entirely of metal...." The cost of a new stand was $2.50. The stand was invented by Jean and Olaf Ponten, hence the name.

The stand is perfect for use as a book stand or magazine stand. It looks great in a shabby chic cottage decor. It folds in various positions and it has two levers that fold onto the book to hold it in place, making the book very secure while keeping it propped open. Great for displaying a cookbook in a kitchen or use to hold a tray or laptop.

Please note that this item is shabby and has chippy paint. It certainly could be painted but I love it just the way it is and hopefully you will too.

Area that holds the book measures 15-1/2" x 11"
