Written by Hal Garrott and lavishly illustrated by Dugald Stewart Walker, Snythergen is a very fanciful tale of a boy who grows to be so large that he decides to run off in the forest to live with the trees. Along the way, he makes friends with a pig, a very clumsy bear and a goldfinch named Sancho Wing, and eventually finds himself at the North Pole visiting Santa Claus before he finally finds his way home. It's not really a Christmas story, it's simply a crazy, magical story intended to entertain children and the adults who read the story to them.

The art nouveau illustrations of Dugald Stewart Walker make this book especially wonderful -- there are 4 color plate illustrations, 16 full-page black-and-while illustrations and a large number of partial page illustraitons. They are ornate and every bit as weirdly beautiful as the story.

This is a 1923 stated first printing, published by McBride & Company. The book is 157 pages long and is 9.25 x 6.25 inches in size.

First edition copies of this book aren't common, and this is a nice solid copy that would be a great addition to your collection!

BOOK CONDITION

The cloth cover shows rubbing at the spine, with a small tear at the upper part of the cloth covering of the spine. The tips are bent and worn, and there is a bit of soiling around the edges. There is also a small ripple on the right-hand side of the cover.

The interior has a small ownership tag inside the front cover. The illustrated endpapers are clean and otherwise unmarked. The interior has no other marks and I did not note any rips or tears. There is some age-related tanning to the pages, but it is not significant. The color plate frontpiece shows a small amount of rippling around the edges, but not enough to impact the illustration. The remaining color plates are all in place. The interior is in good to very good condition.
