This soft-soled all leather shoe is based on an archeological find from the early medieval settlement of Dorestad, located in what was Frisia and is now the Netherlands. It represents a general style of shoe that turns up nearly everywhere settled by viking age Scandinavian peoples during the 9th and 10th centuries.

For the comfort of modern wearers, I have added an additional 3mm thick leather insole to aid in protecting feet from the numerous sharp and pointy objects present in the modern world. This additionally serves to increase the durability of the shoe. I have also taken the liberty of altering the attachment points of the closing toggles on the outsides of the shoes. The original toggles were inserted through holes in the body of the shoe and stitched in place. My toggles pass through a pair of holes and are simply knotted on the outside, which makes it a great deal easier to adjust the shoe to fit an individual foot. I leave my toggles un-knotted so that each pair can be easily adjusted to better fit each wearer. I don't feel that any of this takes away from the historic character of these shoes, while offering customers a more user friendly product.

The shoes pictured here are a men's size 12. I can produce them in sizes ranging from a women's 6 to a men's 13 in high quality deep brown, black, red, or tan cowhide. To ensure a good fit, I will need a measurement of your foot length from the tip of your big toe to the back of your heel, plus a measurement of the circumference of your foot taken at the top of the instep, just at the point where the foot meets the ankle. This is important because footwear from this period typically lacked any easy means of adjustment over the instep (think of modern lace-up shoes). This did not present any real problems for customers, as virtually all shoes were made both locally and individually for the wearer.

While I have attempted to process orders within about one week in the past and will continue to do so, I am periodically inundated with orders and so am now going to make it my general policy to have shoes finished and in the mail within three weeks of the order having been placed.
If you need to have your shoes in a more timely fashion, please do let me know. I'm usually a pretty accommodating person.
