Modern. Tribal. Radical. Ancient.

URBAN COWGIRL is a necklace like no other, and defies description! It's centerpiece is a hefty, beautifully patterned, polished slab of Spicy Jasper that measures about 2 1/2" by 1 1/2". (Both sides are pictured here, as it can be worn with either side facing out.)

The necklace includes a wide variety of stones: Large beads of Red Hair Quartz (quartz with inclusions), smaller beads of Onyx, even smaller beads of Mother of Pearl, natural Buri Seeds, and chips of raw Garnet, translucent pink Rhodocrosite and creamy Wax Opal, strung with Japanese "Delica" glass seed beads. It closes with a gold-plated Pewter toggle clasp and is 20 1/2" long, excluding the focal stone.

This was a fun piece to create, and will be fun to wear also!

MY PROCESS ...

In creating a necklace, I first select a focal piece, and then choose the various stones to complete it through an instinctive (and fun!) process. After lighting some incense and putting on some music that suits my mood that day (new age, world music, nature sounds, classical or soft jazz), I hold the pendant or focal stone in my hand as I look over ALL of the hundreds of types of stone beads in my collection, and choose several (way more than what will eventually be included - usually 20 or more types) that look and feel "right." Next, I narrow things down by repeating the process among the beads I first selected, and place handfuls of about a dozen different types in the old African Mancala game board I use as my beading palette. I then choose complementary glass seed beads (often used as spacers) and a clasp, and begin beading - entirely by instinct. Often, I will get to a certain point and begin over again, until the necklace that is meant to be reveals itself. Sometimes, I find that a stone I hadn't originally chosen is screaming to be included, and I always honor that. Not all of the stones in the final palette are used, and usually the piece turns out entirely differently than what I had originally envisioned. It is a process that feeds my soul. I am inspired by the colors and textures of the materials I work with, and by my spirit guides (all animals! - see my profile), as well as by the constant presence when I'm beading of my two beloved rescued dogs (O'Keeffe and Teddy) and a giant rescued Maine Coon cat named Sassafras, who rules the roost. All three love to be a part of the process.

ABOUT THE STONES...

SPICY JASPER: Tranquility; comforting; love; self-worth

Jasper is a nurturing and protective stone of gentleness and relaxation. It brings tranquility, comforting, wholeness, healing, and gentle endings. Psychically, jasper is used to assist with astral travel. In the physical realm, jasper is used for the liver, gallbladder, soothing the stomach, and balancing yin/yang energies. Pink is the color of universal love. It calms and provides feelings of caring, tenderness and self-worth.

RED HAIR QUARTZ: Understanding; uplifting; creativity

Red Hair Quartz is clear Quartz with golden, green, brown and red internal mossy or needle-like formations. The inclusions are thought to enhance the metaphysical properties of the host rock crystal. Since quartz is already a very strong and versatile metaphysical stone, this combination offers a powerful tool for spiritual and healing purposes. It is considered to increase understanding in difficult situations, providing for timely and appropriate response and resolution. This crystal can ease depression and loneliness, giving us new directions in life, and amplifying creativity.

ONYX: Inner strength; willpower; self-mastery; reason

Onyx is a strengthening stone that can help one approach a lesson or task with greater self-confidence. It is in tune with the energies of the earth, and therefore creates balance and helps us to feel more comfortable in our surroundings. It is often used for centering and alignment of the total person with higher powers, and can help banish feelings of grief. It may facilitate good fortune by helping one to absorb energies needed from the universe. Onyx emanates the energies of self-mastery and can help one to control, focus and diret the will, thus enhancing one’s personal power. It attunes one to the wisdom of instinct, and helps us to see and feel that guidance. It has been used in the treatment of disorders related to bone marrow, soft tissue structures, and the feet.

MOTHER OF PEARL: Nurturing; calming

Mother of Pearl is a soothing, nurturing substance that can lessen stress and its resulting maladies (hypertension, headaches and exhaustion). Like pearl, it is strongly aligned with the feminine, and symbolizes modesty and purity. Mother of Pearl has been used in jewelry throughout the ages, and even as currency for exchange in many parts of the world where metals have been scarce or non-existent.

GARNET: Emotional healing; self-worth; walking the spiritual path

Garnet is reputed to enhance self-esteem, and can help us tune into the energy of the heart and express emotions with greater ease. It sharpens self-perception and extends openness to others. It is said to activate one’s connection to inner guides and guardian angels. Garnet has also been known to promote imagination, calm anger and guard against nightmares. It offers emotional healing, particularly in the areas of guilt and shame. Garnet is often considered a sacred stone. It is said to be beneficial to the bones, spinal column and fluid, cellular composition, heart, lungs, and blood.

RHODOCROSITE: Love; compassion; calming; personal growth

Rhodochrosite represents selfless love and compassion. Those dealing with loss will find a deep love within this stone. Comforting and positive, Rhodochrosite helps to bring repressed emotions to the surface to be acknowledged, addressed, and released, allowing for much personal growth to take place. Rhodochrosite aids in self-forgiveness and self-love. It is also good for attracting love and relieving emotional stress. It can help those stuck in any phase of the grief process by clearing out negative vibrations from the middle charkas, and it allows one to see the purpose behind negative experiences. Physically, Rhodochrosite heals the heart, adjusts imbalances in the circulatory and nervous systems, relieves migraines, and clears up infections. Keep Rhodochrosite in the bedroom to help with sexual issues.

WAX (Yellow) OPAL: Purification; calming; healing

Opal is known as "The Gem of the Gods," and has always had a mystical significance. It is an inspirational stone of love and hope, which is said to aid in psychic vision, imagination and creativity, and to have the power to open the spiritual centers. Opals contain water, and can amplify and mirror feelings, buried emotions and desires, helping to release inhibitions. Opal is also a very spiritual stone, and can help one be "invisible" in situations where you don't care to be noticed. Opal brings happy dreams. It also eases the process of change. Physically, opal is helpful for eyesight and Parkinson's disease. Yellow Opal enhances visualization and can take its keeper on mystical and magical journeys beyond the physical world. It enhances the imagination and creativity, and can help turn dreams into reality. It lifts the mood, lightens the heart and can help turn negative thought into positive thought. On a healing level, Yellow Opal can help ease the affects of many neurological disorders and diseases, as well as immune and nervous system disorders and diseases.
