A HANDSOME LATE VICTORIAN OR EDWARDIAN CLASSIC FAUX TORTOISESHELL BACK COMB WITH MOULDED DESIGN; circa late 19th to early 20th century

This sale is for a handsome faux tortoiseshell back comb with moulded decoration.

SIZE: 4 ins h x 5 ins w (10 x 13 cms)

CONDITION: Good vintage condition

DATE: hair combs are difficult to date since they were often made in the same style for decades

DESCRIPTION:

This type of comb which is broader than it is high and deeply curved to accommodate the back of the skull is known as a back comb. They were intended to be worn at the rear of the dressing as shown in picture 5. This is taken from a fashion print dated 1895 and shows how combs of this type were used to support the high Victorian updo.

The wide heading provided scope for all kinds of decorative treatments. This one has an attractive moulded pattern and the faux tortoise effect is very nicely done.

FURTHER INFORMATION:

This pretty hair comb is made in brown coloured mottled celluloid and gives the effect of so called dark tortoiseshell. By this period (1890 – 1920s) genuine materials like tortoiseshell had become very expensive. Therefore most of the hair ornaments which appear to be made of such materials are, in fact, made from synthetics. These faux combs and barrettes are some of the prettiest to be found at this period, since it is unusual to find two exactly alike. Some of them are very convincing and difficult to distinguish from the genuine material, and are skilfully treated to imitate the colouring and texture.
