Mermaid cross stitch, completed and framed

---The Story---

What could be better than a joke about mermaids that references early 90s hip hop?

Seriously, what?

I can't think of anything.

This is one of my first original designs -- and still one of my favorites -- for its illusion of classiness, its unusual (for me) pastel color palette, and its deceptive complexity (from a stitching perspective). And, of course, because it's a pun about mermaids and hip hop.

---The Deets---

This cross stitch is a punny "Poison"-based joke: "poisson" means "fish" in French. A mermaid is a fish. (Get it? GET IT?) It also plays on mermaids' well-known penchant for luring sailors into the sea, where they drown.

The completed stitch depicts a mermaid with flowing hair and aquamarine body (sea greenish), with some black scale accents and outlining. The text, "that girl is poisson (poisson!)" is stitched in a dark blue that compliments the idea of the ocean.

Each cross stitch will be made to order, with the option of receiving it either simply on cloth, mounted on self-stick mounting board, or framed in a unique, straight-from-the-Goodwill, probably-tastefully-pre-distressed frame.

*CUSTOMIZE: You may request to not have the little "poisson" emphasis at the bottom of the piece, if you'd like a more classical look rather than the extra-strength song reference.

And you may specify a preference for hair and skin tones of the mermaid if you like. I'm fairly certain not all mermaids are white blonde ladies...er, half-ladies. Also pictured are custom requests of white mermaids with red hair and brown hair (and a fencing sword for the brunette!).

*FRAME: The frames pictured are examples of Goodwill frames. This stitch fits in a 4x6 frame. If you have a color preference for framing, let me know and I'll go through my cache of Goodwill frames to find something that will accommodate your wishes.

Please NOTE: If you are outside the U.S. or Canada, you will receive this piece on a self-stick mounting board ready to frame yourself, to save on shipping costs (which would certainly cost you more than purchasing a frame locally).

*SHIP: This stitch will ship within about 2 weeks, unless I convo you otherwise (or it is announced in my shop announcement under the shop banner, or my shop policies), via USPS first class with delivery confirmation or international first class. Again, international orders outside the U.S. will be mailed ready for you to frame.

---The Legal Stuff---

This design was invented by a process of trial and error with needles and thread rather than planned out on paper. As a result, it is unique to me (and to you as buyers) and I am not currently selling this design pattern at this time.

Frequently asked questions about aliciawatkins

I love to do custom work during the non-holiday months! I try to work on one custom project at a time so that I can give each project my full customizing attention; as a result, a significant lead time on deadlines for receiving your custom order is very much appreciated.

If possible, try to contact me at least a month in advance of a deadline for receiving a 5x7 custom cross stitch. (That said, if you're in a pinch and you know I'm the stitcher for the job, convo me anyway! If I happen to be in between custom orders, I can often get things out in a much shorter time, and like I said, I love working with customers on personalized stitchery.)
Most of my small finished cross stitches have an option for gift wrapping.

If you don't see a drop-down list as you purchase a small hooped or framed cross stitch (smaller than 4x6), but you would like your item to be wrapped in plain paper (with a small notecard for your message included), request gift wrap as you check out in the "notes to seller"!

If you're having your gift sent directly to the recipient, please double-check the address it's going to before you finish checking out, and let me know what you'd like me to write in the notecard to your recipient! :)
Mini kits are available for wholesale ordering at any time; contact me for details on which kits I have available with shelf-ready labeling, and for pricing details!

I also offer a selection of finished cross stitch available for wholesale or certain consignment situations, for stores that feel my work would be a good fit. Contact me if you're interested in carrying my work in your store, and we'll talk about what I've done in the past and what you're looking for! :)
I believe in using secondhand frames because it's eco-friendly, supports my local thrift shops, and allows me to frame your items, if you'd like that, at very low cost.

Because they are unique and unapproved by you, I don't pass on the cost of the secondhand frames to you, except for the cost of shipping (usually about a $2 difference).

When you order an item from me, rest assured that you are only paying for the stitchwork, and you may treat the frame as a "suggestion" -- if you don't like it, give the frame away! Your 4x6 or larger cross stitch will come with a mounting board that will allow you to easily pop it out of the "suggested" frame I've sent it in and into any same-sized frame of your choice.
I can't send you a photo of your options for 4x6 or larger frames; I have too many frames and a too quickly rotating stock for that. However, you're welcome to let me know your preferences in color and material (i.e. wood, metal, plastic) and I'll do what I can to accommodate your wishes.

If you receive your stitchwork and you HATE the frame I chose from my cache of secondhand frames, never fear! The stitching for a 4x6 or larger frame will be mounted on a board that you can simply pop out of the secondhand frame you received, and pop INto a frame you choose from a local store, another Etsy seller, or anywhere you find perfect frames.

Because the secondhand frames I send are free, I cannot offer replacements or frame-related refunds.
Google and Youtube are your BFFs in learning to cross stitch, but if you've purchased a kit or pattern from my shop, I can also offer you a Basic Cross Stitch instruction booklet via email. Just let me know you'd like one, and I'll send it along! :)
