All drypoints are hand inked and pulled by me using traditional printmaking techniques.

Drypoint
This is simply achieved by scratching the surface of a metal plate with a sharp steel or diamond point. The scratch or burr left is then inked in the same way as an etched plate.
I start my drypoint by selecting a plate. This can be any number of materials, from copper and zinc to aluminium and plastic. Any sheet material with a smooth surface that will give a nice burr when scratched.
Working from sketches and photographs I scratch my design in mirror image on to the plate. Changing the angle and pressure of the steel point can give a huge variety of line quality.
When I'm happy with the design, I can take my first print. Using a upturned leather mushroom called a dabber, ink is worked in to the burr. Then with a muslin cloth the access ink is wiped off leaving the ink only in the grooves and scratches.
Placing the inked plate face up on the printing press, pre dampened paper is carefully laid on top then three layers of felt. This sandwich is then forced between two steel rollers. The paper is pushed in to the grooves at such a force it pulls out all the ink. Now the paper is dried and flattened.
A drypoint plate is less robust than an etched one and as a result the edition runs are often shorter.
