:: New Light ::

The new year always brings the call of the southern deserts for me, and I crave clean, bright, elemental forms and spaces to nourish my soul. I created this ethereal pendant as a way of capturing that feeling. It emerges from pale earth and bright sunlight with the serenity of the drylands wilderness.

The long pendant is an assemblage of elements, all woven into a nylon strand. At the bottom hangs a fine silver pendant molded from a fragment of organ pipe cactus rib. The organ pipes are close relatives of the saguaros, but grow in a dense cluster of stems rather than singly. They can only be found north of the border in south Arizona, which is where I discovered the dried rib fragment. I lightly oxidized the pendant and finished it by hand, preserving the delicate details of the imprint.

Above it is a bead of fossil mastodon ivory which I made by hand, polishing it through a succession of finer grits of papers until it gleamed. This ivory was found in Siberia, but the mastodons are long gone. Next you will see a little polished bit of shell with a lovely spiral inside...symbol of eternity. Above it are two stacked quartz beads from Africa with unusual clarity and a rough surface that I love. And finally there is a fine silver bead that I also made by hand.

The weaving of the cord parts from there to form the strand of the necklace, and terminates at a small handmade fossil walrus ivory bead from Alaska. The weaving is tight and the cord is comfortable, durable, and even washable, and will last for many years. It lends a talismanic look and a simple, earthy feel to the piece that I find very friendly and warm.

A bit of desert light...this is a very feminine piece but it also evokes the wilderness. Perfect for the wild spirit.

Size: 20" from the back of the neck to the base of the pendant. The entire cord measures 31". The pendant assemblage measures 5" from top to bottom and is 1 1/8" wide at the mastodon ivory bead.

Care: You may wash the cord in lukewarm water, with a little gentle detergent if necessary. Do not scrub; rinse, and blot dry with a towel. Do not immerse the pendant assemblage--wipe it clean with a damp cloth. The silver may be polished with a jeweler's polishing cloth, but avoid the cord as you do so.

New Light will arrive giftwrapped in a hand-decorated box, along with a handwritten descriptive label.
