FURTHER INFORMATION:

At this period the hair was worn in a high topknot which was often pierced by single prong ornaments, sometimes representing swords and daggers. These leaf shaped accessories with a bit of fancy openwork at the top are typical of the period and are made in celluloid faux tortoiseshell.

This manner of wearing this type of decorative comb is shown in the accompanying photograph on the mannequin and in picture 5. This is taken from a contemporary photograph of the 1890s and shows a group of three pretty young American ladies wearing the distinctive puffy sleeves of circa 1895. They all have their hair dressed in a high top knot which is pierced by a single pronged ornament of very similar design.

This pretty hair comb is made in brown coloured celluloid and gives the effect of so called dark tortoiseshell. By this period (1890 – 1910s) genuine materials like tortoiseshell had become very expensive. Therefore most of the hair ornaments which appear to be made of such materials are, in fact, made from synthetics. These faux combs and barrettes are some of the prettiest to be found at this period, since it is unusual to find two exactly alike. Some of them are very convincing and difficult to distinguish from the genuine material, and are skilfully treated to imitate the colouring and texture.
