The eyes of Buddha, gently closed in meditation, are the feature of this beautiful, big carved wood cabochon intended for belt buckles.

It was crafted exclusively for Indounik in Bali where Buddhism and other religions have had a big influence in shaping the type of Hinduism practised by most of the island's 3.8 million inhabitants.

Measuring 75mm x 45mm, it could just as easily be used for the lid of a little treasure chest.

This piece is carved from a local hardwood known as kayu sawo or Indonesian rosewood.

Bali is the biggest Hindu outpost outside of India but it's a hybrid form of the religion that incorporates elements of Buddhism, animism, and even Chinese Confucianism.

This religion is practised by more than 90 percent of Balinese as well as some residents of Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan, and Lombok, the little island to Bali's east. Together they represent only about 3 per cent of the population of Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim nation state.

What might not be so widely known is that in Java, once predominantly Hindu, a substantial number of Muslims follow a non-orthodox, Hindu-influenced form of Islam known as Agama Jawa.

Crafting beautiful ornaments from wood is a time-honoured tradition among many of the world's cultures, including several of the diverse ethnic groups scattered through the Indonesian archipelago.

Beautiful grains and delicately designs come alive in the hands of talented artisans such as those found on the island of Bali.
