The Owl is one of the many animals depicted in Pacific Northwest native art. Often, they are associated with the souls of deceased ancestors. This one represents to me, someone old who passed on fishing skills to the young.

Title: Owl Goes Fishing By Jon Gosling 2012

Designed by myself, then hand carved in fine detail from White Cedar that came down in a windstorm. Next the piece was carefully painted in acrylics. Finally a protective non toxic sealer was applied. Stands approx 6 3/4 tall and is free standing. Would make a great gift for that special fisherman, or to remember a loved one. :) Hope you enjoy it, as much as I did carving it.

Note: The cracks in white Cedar are natural and not a defect and in no way affect the piece. I choose White Cedar based on these imperfections to add character to my pieces. :)

I am not Native American, but respect the craft and craftsman of the style represented. The "totem" poles of the Pacific Northwest have always intrigued me, and any time I see one on display, I am always awed at the skill involved in such well thought out carvings. :) Many efforts have been made to save original poles for preservation, but the art was on the edge of being lost at one point in time as carvers aged and passed on. I am happy to say though, that today, there are quite a few younger carvers getting involved in preserving this tradition and style of art.
