I love these old primitive hand thrown French preserving jars which were made in our region in the distant past.
Long ago the French used these jars for storing meat products such as pate, duck, chicken and pork.

The meat would be cooked and then put in the jars. Boiling goose or duck fat was poured over the meat which when cooled formed an airtight seal. The jars were covered with cloth and stored in a dark cool place. In this way meat was preserved before refrigeration was common in the French countryside.

Most regions of France had a typical local type or 'style' of these jars and these come from our region..the Poitou-Charente.
Most often the jars are more 'squat'...that is short and fat...but these are rather unusual for their more tall slender shape.

As you can see from the photos they were rather 'roughly' thrown by local potters using the clay that is abundant in the region but this is what gives them an authentic rustic charm.

These 3 pots are from my personal collection but more and more I am letting some things go...my husband says so that I can replace them with something new!

Now they look wonderful on a kitchen shelf holding utensils...or they are perfect for a casual summer bouquet.

The largest is 9 1/2 (24cms) inches tall and the smallest is 7 1/2 (19cms) inches tall. They are all in excellent antique condition without cracks.

Something special and unique for your French style decor..and because they are just 'So French!'
