I went searching for the perfect frame for a stained glass mosaic. Since I couldn't find one ANYwhere, I decided to make one. Then I made some more. I thought you might appreciate them too, so here they are:

I start with 1/2” thick Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF). This is the best surface for indoor mosaics - smooth, durable and dimensionally stable, it takes paint well and will not warp, shrink or sag like other materials.

Then I attach clear pine trim to the sides of the panel. This frames the mosaic surface, providing durability and a finished look. I fill the nail holes to match the wood, then sand it all smooth for you, so you can paint the trim or not, as you choose. (I like to paint the frame to match the grout color.)

Comes with heavy duty hanger and screw, not attached.

The frame rises just a wee bit more than 1/8" above the surface of the MDF to cover and protect the edges of the glass and grout. This is perfect for stained glass, and will give your mosaic a much more finished look than an unframed surface.

This 8.5" x 8.5" size has a "mosaicable" area of 8" x 8". Need more than one? I can make as many as you need, and I offer a discount if you're buying more than 4. Need a different size? I offer a variety of sizes in my Etsy shop, but if you can't find what you need there, I can make 'em custom for you, framed (in 1/2" MDF) or unframed (in 1/4" and 1/2" MDF). Just contact me and let me know what you need.

You may want to apply sealer to your frame before applying tile or other tesserae, as this will protect your finished art piece from damage due to moisture. Lots of folks like to use a 4:1 mix of glue to water for this purpose.
