This book is dedicated to all the creatures, large and small, all of us cruising around, pondering things, doing whatever we do with the bits of star stuff that we’ve been given, gazing in wonder at it all. The tardigrades and ants and birds and whales and hermit crabs and frantic squirrels and busy lizards and cuttlefish and octopus and yes, even the rocks and the ocean and definitely the moon. And the Distant Cow. And the Frog of Knowledge. And the moth who wants to be seen, just for a moment. And the baby bird who needs a little encouragement. And the transforming caterpillar. All of us, together, doing our best, hoping, trying, being the best bits of stars that we know how to be, being friends to one another just like Sloth and Manatee. This is for you.

Sloth and Manatee began as a chronicle of thoughts and a little peaceful space at the outset of the Covid lockdown in California in mid-March, 2020. As the pandemic wore on and our world struggled with getting bigger and smaller at the same time, and as we stared into the ugly face of injustice and into the pits in our stomachs, Sloth and Manatee rambled on, curious and confused but most of all friends. My friend Erika pointed out that sloths and manatees are among the only mammals with a unique number of neck vertebrae. On some level they are uniquely connected, always there for each other, like Frog and Toad or Snoopy and Woodstock. Most of all, they represent limitless love for nature and the never ending conversation.
