This a brand new box design!

A timeless, unique box.... wonderfully distinctive with a little hand formed bird on it's square black lid. A vessel you will want to display in your home. A great addition to your own box collection or a gift for a friend who collects boxes or birds.

If you do want to send this as a gift, we will wrap it in colorful tissue and tie a ribbon around it. We are also happy to include a personal message from you.

This piece of art pottery is about 4.75 inches tall (including the bird)
and about 2.25 inches wide.

This box and it's lid were hand built from slabs of clay.

After bisque firing, the body of the box was glazed with a poppy red orange crackle glaze. Steve makes this glaze. The lid was left unglazed.

The box is then placed in a specially built kiln and heated until the glaze has melted. Still glowing with intense heat, it is removed from the kiln. This thermal shock causes the glaze to crackle.

Next the box is placed into a container of sawdust. The sawdust ignites and produces a smoky atmosphere where carbon is absorbed into the unglazed clay and the crackled glaze.

Sue makes each of the little birds one at a time by hand. The bird is added after the raku firing. The charm includes beads of amber, carnelian and peach aventurine.
Each piece has its own distinct crackle pattern and is unique in the way the carbon darkens the clay.
We design , make and raku fire every box ourselves. No molds are used!

*Raku work is not designed to hold water or food.
