This Japanese period okimono figure of a frog has inset eyes, which I believe to be agate set in some kind of gold paint or metal. Marked on the bottom: Japan and a kanji character.

Wonderful wood caring of frog which shows off the texture and highlights of the root. Raised knobs across the back of this frog. I believe this frog carving to be from the 1920s.

My understanding is that this carving is from a root of the cryptomeria tree. That is a type of Japanese cedar. This wood is considered premium only when found in one valley near Kyota. Hardened by a lack of moisture and poor soil, the famed cryptomeria develops slowly, forming the prized grain patterns. Carving this fine wood was the sole craft of the tiny village of Samegai. They were produced from the 1920s to the 1950s.

Near-perfect condition. Some teeny, tiny dings to the wood that show his age but no chips or even major scratches.

3 1/4" long. 1 1/2" tall.
