This is a stunning main carpet from Bokhara decorated with two columns of Filpa or Elephant's Foot Guls and secondary Chemche guls resembling ancient berekets with double ram's horns and symbols relating to fertility. This classic Turkoman rug features a characteristically limited color palette incorporating crimson red, muted oranges, white and inky blue. Multiple sets of borders with prickly burdock symbols and geometric stars add to the formal air of this elegant and masculine Bokhara carpet. End pieces featuring ladder-like lozenges framing orange bereket motifs provide a solid end to the rug mimicking the flat-woven end pieces seen on earlier Tekke rugs and Turkoman pieces.

The pile is tightly woven (the front and back look pleasantly similar) and the rug could easily be used on the reverse side if you need an alternative to the distressed look. This all-pile carpet is woven with asymmetric knots and wool pile set on a cotton foundation. Faux fringes were attached to both ends sometime during the rug's life. There are several low-pile areas were the cotton warp and weft show through (most likely due to not flipping and rotating the rug's traffic area regularly.) However, most the rug has lovely directional wool pile and all the wrapped end cords appear to be in good shape. I have attached a cotton hanging sleeve on the back by hand, so the rug's structure is not altered in any way.

I acquired this rug from someone who was selling their grandparent's rug collection, so I would estimate it was made sometime around 1950. Unfortunately, my dog (chihuahua/dachshund) was attacked by two coyotes, so I'm selling off a few items to pay for the $850 vet bill. I only purchase rug that appeal to me and i want to live with for a long time, so I hope you will experience the same joy.

Edit: Measurements are 37 inches wide and 5' 3" or 63"long (excluding fringes).
