Passing the Hat Street Performers in America 1981 by Patricia J. Campbell includes 34 photographs by Alice Belkin.

One of the ancient professions, busking, had deteriorated to a form of begging by almost anyone before its resurgence in the late 1960s, perhaps with the help of the Hippie generation.

Passing the Hat by Patricia J. Campbell describes that resurgence with the sympathy of the young performer she once was, as she traveled from San Francisco to New Orleans to New York and Boston and places in between interviewing the performers, violinists, magicians, jugglers, mimes, clowns and other fast talkers from fairs to the lonely street corner or the saxophonist in the subway. From the problems of "working the Street" to the "Hassles with the Law."

It is a fascinating part of the theater world, and always has been! It is plainly described, and Alice Belkin has provided dozens of photographs of performers.

This book is in good condition. The text is clean, unmarked and firmly bound. The very ends of the spine may show fading, and there are slight signs of foxing. The dust jacket shows only slight handling b and is clear except for a very small tear near the top of the spine.
