Purchased from an antique dealer who recently aquired this lovely cross on a trip to Paris.
These beautiful carved ivory crosses were often given as Christening gifts to babies of the French aristocracy. Known as 'Croix de Bapteme' in French. Collectors refer to them as cradle crosses as they would be hung on the nursery wall above the cradle as a talisman of safety for the new baby to protect them from evil. The significance of the ivory being a representation of purity.

The cross is in great condition with the exception of a tiny chip on one corner of one face only, you can just see it in photo number 3 at the bottom. The cross is double sided and beautifully carved in the form of roses. Suspended on a chunky gold color ring and measuring 2 & 3/4 inches long not including the ring.

This would be an exquisite accessory with an ivory vintage wedding dress !
