Scup grow to 18” but 10” to 12” is more common. At least a dozen varieties exist around the world and they are a very important food fish. I found them difficult to catch the first time I encountered them because they are such great bait stealers. This one was caught in Newport RI.

Original GYOTAKU are considered a thoughtful gift and are believed to bring good luck not only to fishermen but business people as well. The process is fairly simple: Pigment is applied to a real fish. Then the cloth is carefully touched to the fish. The GYOTAKU is pulled and a detailed mirror image results. I then paint the eye. Several images may be made from the same fish, but no two are ever exactly alike. Each piece is created in a smoke/pet free studio.

This original GYOTAKU (fish rubbing) was made on stained cloth and features a porgy often called scup that is 12" long. The cloth measures 20 x 13 inches. Frame and hang this happy GYOTAKU where it will bring joy and good luck. I identify the fish, sign each original and supply a certificate of authenticity and other details of the art.
