An artisan cut, natural Brazilian Emerald measuring 23.5 x 17.4 x 6.3 mm; this is a very unusual piece, being largely translucent with a distinct transparent area showing the clear crystals and the glittery inclusions called silk, just beneath the surface of the stone. These bright pinpoints of rutile give off multi-colored reflections on both faces of the stone, making this gem an excellent focal for a pendant, a brooch or even an elegant statement ring, whether set with either silver, gold or platinum. Being an artisan cut gem, it is not a perfect oval, nonetheless this adds to the character and individuality of the stone. It is also of a depth that allows for easy bezel setting.

The pictures give an idea of how the gemstone looks under various lighting conditions and different backgrounds. The last picture shows the detail on the back of the stone.

Emeralds have a rich history: Cleopatra and Napoleon were known to have been avid emerald collectors. They were prized by the ancient Incas and Aztecs of South America, as well as the maharajas and maharanis of India.

Emeralds are considered a "Type III" gemstone by the GIA which means that they are virtually always included to one degree or another. The great majority of the emeralds in commerce are treated to minimize the appearance of the inclusions. The industry practice for treatment is "oiling" which is the practice of immersing emeralds in a colorless oil or resin. Therefore emeralds should not be cleaned with an ultrasonic cleaner because this oil could be removed or damaged. In addition, do not clean emeralds in hot soapy water since it too can remove this oil. Avoid sudden temperature changes as emeralds lose their color when strongly heated.

Emerald is the green variety of Beryl and has a hardness of 7.5 - 8 on the Mohs scale. Emerald is the birthstone for May and for commemorating the 20th, 35th and 55th wedding anniversaries. It is also considered the birthstone for Taurus.
