Scarce copy of Upright Hilda by Donald Hutter and illustrated by Barbara Byfield, published in the USA by Bobbs-Merrill in 1968, stated first edition.

This unusual book tells the story of Hilda, a very prim, proper and sensible woman who does not approve of fun or play. She marries and has three children then suddenly develops a flu and dies, but "drew little grief from any friend, for if in life one cannot gladden, then in death one cannot sadden". Her husband saves some money and buries her vertically...and so Hilda remains upright even in death!

The illustrations in olive, blue, mustard and fuchsia are a real delight.

The hardcover book is in near mint condition. Only the most minor rubbing to corners and a couple of tiny chips to back cover. Pages are crisp, vibrant and near mint. No annotations, no inscriptions. Pictorial boards covered in a washable special library binding. No dust jacket.
