This gown is from between the years of 1908 to 1923. It comes from Hamburger's Department store which opened in 1908 and was one of the first department stores in Los Angeles. It was purchased and became May Company in 1923. The tag is the same font and design of the department store too. It's a beautiful design and considering the age, is in good condition although it does need restoration. It measures 78 inches long from the top to the end of the built in train, it's 36 inches around under the arms, 32 inches around at approximately the waist, and opens out to 48 inches around at the widest point. I thinks it's about 40 inches where the hips would be. There some areas that need to be restored. There are several places where the lace is torn. Although because of the ruching, it doesn't show if draped carefully. The lace is quite delicate from its age and I believe it will probably tear quite easily so I think this would best be used as a display or museum piece. There are a few faint stains too. There are millinery flowers decorating the front too. Originally they were hand sewn on but are now attached with a corsage pin. The dress closes with hook and eyes and snaps and it's partly machine made and partly hand made. Use the zoom feature to get a close look at this historical piece.
