From the 1920s until the 1940s, Golden Wheel manufactured a full range of lighters, from much-sought-after beautifully enameled fashion lighters to inexpensive novelty lighters. This American made lift arm pocket lighter is probably from the late 1920s. Not sporting the expensive embellishments of more exotic Golden Wheels from this era, it is solidly constructed from chrome plated brass with an engraved vertical art deco design and an unused monogram shield. In its time, this pocket lighter was likely designed to be affordable and reliable for the everyday working man. This lift arm style is my favorite type of pocket lighter. To light it, you lift up its arm to expose the wick then strike the horizontally mounted spark wheel. Close the arm with a simple flick of the thumb to extinguish the flame. The flint chamber is accessed by removing the screw at the end of the file wheel arm; fuel is added from the base (see photo #5).

This Golden Wheel works well and will be shipped with a flint and without fluid. (If you don't plan to use this lighter occasionally, please remove the flint so it does not deteriorate and become impacted over time.) I've disassembled and cleaned the file wheel, unblocked the flint chamber, replaced the flint spring, trimmed and tested the original wick, and restored this classic to working condition. It sparks strongly and sometimes takes a couple of tries to light. I've also cleaned all interior/exterior elements of the lighter body to remove any major grim from age and use. A good amount of the original chrome finish has flaked away. The exposed brass metals have created an interesting random speckled pattern on both sides of the body. I've provided high quality photos to offer the best preview of this lighter's condition. I think it actually looks nicer in person than my photos show. Please take a look and feel free to ask any questions.
