These hypoallergenic earrings were made with handformed niobium wire and brilliantly colored Effetre glass from Murano Italy. The beads are round and formed in a deep transparent red glass that looks almost opaque in subdued light but is dazzling in direct sunlight. The beads dangle on double 'S' links connecting to French hooks.

The beads are similar to each other in size and appearance. The picture accurately represents coloration. They are about 7/16 of an inch in diameter. Overall length of each earring is about 2 inches.

Murano is an island just North of Venice Italy where the art of glass making has been handed down father to son for centuries. The colors produced there are vibrant, there are many to choose from, and they have gone through hundreds of years of testing and improvement. They are beautiful and they stay beautiful.

Each bead is individually hand formed in my shop using Effetre glass. In this case red glass is heated to its molten state and wrapped on a mandrel which is spun and manipulated to form the basic shape of the bead. Then the bead is slowly cooled in a kiln to relieve heat stress.

All findings (ear wires, links, and eyelets) are hand formed in my shop using niobium wire. Many people develop sensitivity to various metals. Niobium is an excellent choice for anyone concerned about possible sensitivity. Niobium is physiologically inert . . . completely hypoallergenic. It is the metal of choice in many body piercing applications.

Niobium is also an eye catching alternative to gold or silver. In its natural state it is a lustrous gunmetal gray with perhaps the slightest hint of bronze. It is highly resistant to corrosion and, for example, will not tarnish or corrode even if worn while swimming in the ocean.

Is niobium a precious metal that might be compared to gold or silver? You bet! It is rare, it is difficult to refine, and it is beautiful. Currently Canada, Austria, Latvia, and Luxemburg all use it in the minting of bullion coins.
