Antique 1911 The Metcalf-Call Readers A Second Reader by Ernest and Bertha Browning Cobb. Perfect for homeschooling!

Not for the faint of heart!

Fantastic old 1911 schoolbook filled with poems, stories, and beautiful Victorian style illustrations. The condition is extremely shabby, in the most literal sense. After all, this book is over 100 years old and has had countless little fingers turning its pages over the years.

Although the book is in completely readable condition, there are many issues to point out.

The bookplate inside the front cover says "City of Boston. School Committee" and is stamped Oct. 1914. There is light soiling to some of the pages (nothing that interferes with the reading), but that pales in comparison to the multitude of pages that bear rips, tears, and/or yellowed tape from repairs made long, long ago (remarkably, those pages are all still readable). The worst section is pages 133 to 148 where every single page has been taped back together. And although there are no missing pages, some are completed separated from the binding and just loose inside the book. Other pages/sections are hanging on by a thread - literally. This has all resulted in the edges of those pages being "ruffled" due to the small rips and tears around their outer edges. Add to that the occasional folded page corners and pencil marks (perhaps from homework assignments), and you have yourself an authentic piece of American history. This is the type of school book your great or great, great grandparents used in school.

There are a full year's worth of contents arranged by month, starting with September (the beginning of the school year) and running through August.

All in all, a delightful little book from years-gone-by. But again - please be aware that this book is in EXTREMELY distressed condition.

Charming b&w illustrations sprinkled throughout! Please enlarge photos to see some samples!
