Ever received a package stuffed with twists of Kraft paper as protection for the item sent?
I pulled some particularly promising shapes from a box at year's end and decided to try their printmaking potential.

BrokenFlowers(L) is one of the four last prints coming of the press in 2011 (BrokenFlowers(R) is the partner print. The pair is shown in the last detail image. BrokenFlowers(R) is available on www.ugallery.com/karin-bruckner).

All were based on prints and ghost prints of the Kraft paper segments. They created an amazing imprint of folds and crevices, a tissue like quality with the sensibility of a photographic negative akin to an x-ray.
The paper imprint backgrounds underwent a sequence of additional layering to cull the image inherent in each. Shapes and layouts in the first two prints clearly and instantly suggested disassembled flowers; a theme I elaborated on in this piece by adding and overlaying smaller shapes and punchy colors on a dark, painterly background with pronounced brushwork.
As a final layer I printed a stark ink outline to tie the broken shapes together. This gave the whole image a somewhat pop-arty quality and brings the initial paper shapes back to the fore.

Colors rendition and intensity may vary depending on your screen.
