Vintage patent medicine bottle. Aqua glass bottle embossed with "POND'S EXTRACT". In 1846, Theron T. Pond of Utica, New York developed a healing tea which he extracted from the witch hazel plant, based on information he obtained from an Oneida Indian medicine man. He used this formulation to heal small cuts and other assorted ailments (witch hazel has a powerful astringent action). This medicinal tea, which he called "Golden Treasure", was later renamed "Pond's Extract" after his death in 1850. The Pond Company went on to become an icon of American consumer products, including "Pond's Vanishing Cream" and "Pond's Cold Cream". This bottle is in "as found" condition. It measures 5 1/2" tall by 2 1/2" wide by 1 3/4" thick, and is oval shaped. It originally would have had a cork closure, and probably comes from the 1900's. It is marked on the bottom "1846" which is the year the formula was patented and the Ponds company was formed. It is in very good to excellent condition, with no chips or cracks.
