Rare 1847 antique world map by Emil von Sydow. This finely engraved original map was published by Justus Perthes in Gotha, Germany in the Methodischer Hand Atlas. It also features a map of Australia. Text in German
The historic value of this 160 years old vintage map is given by the use of the color methodology developed by its carthographer, Emil von Sydow. The color methodology for landscape features using hachures , green for lowland s and brown for highlands, blue was used for drainage.

Size: 12" by 16" plus a margin

Condition: Fair. The map shows its age. It has dark spots on the image and small tears in the margins (where the map was folded in two). Please look at the images carefully. I will be glad to send you more images.

I found this map in Colonia Valdense, a town located in southwestern Uruguay founded in 1856, following the arrival of Italian immigrants from Piedmont. The town is named after Pierre Valdo, a French priest , founder of the religious movement known as «the Valdensians». The atlas that contained this map was probably brought here by those immigrants or the ones that followed.

Sent to you in a flat envelope, folded in two (as it was in the original Atlas) protected with a cello sleeve and cardboard.

Please look at my policies:
