1950 Olivetti Lettera 22 Typewriter - German Character Layout

Description

It wasn't until I started testing this sleek machine that I discovered that it is clearly meant for typing in the German language. The first indicator was that it is in QWERTZ format and the Z and Y keys are switched. Then I also saw the following keys: Ä, Ö, ß, §, Ü. This brown/greenish Olivetti Lettera 22 was made in Italy, but obviously for a German speaking/writing clientele.

Something that I have found quite curious is that there are numbers and letters written inside the case and engraved on the machine itself in several places (the bottom, back and front). They read as following:
K.P.L.
MO734779
3363258 (separately)
So it obviously played an important part in some kind of business or organization. Listed before the numbers is K.P.L. Upon researching KPL and German dialect, I found the following information on the Communist Party of Luxembourg or KPL (Kommunistische Partei Luxemburg): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Communist_Party_of_Luxembourg

If this typewriter was indeed used by the KPL, wouln't that be so interesting?!! This, of course, is only our wild imagination of what could be....

This particular machine was made in 1950. It has its original bright blue zippered cover. The outside of the case has a little rough look to it, as pictured. There is a little damage to the edging of the case. It also actually types pretty well for its age with freely moving keys and arms; the ribbon's just low on ink. The inside of the case says, "case and typewriter made in Italy" and the back of the typewriter has a plate that says, "Olivetti-Irvea/Made in Italy". This beauty would be a great addition to any typewriter collection or vintage decor. How awesome would this be for someone that speaks German? The case measures approx. 12.5" x 14.5" x 4" and weighs approx. 11 lbs.
