This is a fun little one-of-a-kind handmade felt brooch. I created it from "left over" felt from my journals. This felt was made by me by hand using pre-carded batts of Merino wool. I used hot soapy water and the agitation of my hands to make the felt. By kneading the batt like bread dough and using moisture, the scales on the fibers of the wool open up and attach themselves permanently to each other to create felt. Resist dying is a technique using metal clips and other objects and attaching them to the felt before placing the whole thing into a dye bath. There are three consecutive dye baths ranging in color value from light to dark. Before placing the felt in each bath, the wool is re-folded and the metal pieces are clipped in a different order. The pattern created is always random and surprising! I love to embroider using hand dyed silk ribbon. I embellished the felt with silk ribbon, lace and seed beads. The backing is recycled fabric from a silk shirt. 1 1/2 X 2 inches.
