The initial purpose of this painting was to learn to paint white. At first, one would think that white is an absence of color, but I learned that color quietly mingles in and out of white creating its beauty and dimension. First I painted the wrapped quills and the brown tips of the eagle feathers on the headdress, leaving space for the white "breath feathers". Feeling uncomfortable in the unfamiliar, I "Paused Before Proceeding" in the vacant space. I began with whispers of lavender and soft blue to create reflections and shadows of light on the white, and then defined the outer edges with fine lines of the brown feather tips to create continuity in each feather. While those first few moments of "Pause Before Proceeding" felt uneasy, it allowed me time to contemplate and hear the inner directive of what I should do next -- to respond rather than react.
Just as white can feel like an absence of color, pausing can feel like an absence of action. Pausing is a common trait among Native people, for example a pause in conversation is a show of respect for its importance. It allows time for honoring what has been said, as well as time to consider a response. There is a beauty in the silences of conversation that allow for contemplation. Even music needs silence. It's the spaces between the notes that create the rhythm and drama. It is in silence that we can hear our intuitive guiding voice. It is only in silence that we are able to hear the Creator's answers to our prayers. I hope this painting inspires you toward silence, and that it offers you times of quiet contemplation that will guide you to the beauty of your own song.
