This is an original Shodo piece, hand brushed by calligraphy artist Kyomi Takahashi from Fuji-shi, Japan.

"The character, pronounced "bu", symbolizes the "warrior" or "martial". It is made up of two lesser characters that are combined to create the Kanji (ideogram). These two characters are "spear" and "suppressing a revolt", giving the meaning of "military" or "martial". The whole character for "military" has the context of "quelling an uprising by use of the polearm", and is highly symbolic of a warrior. The Japanese spear is a battlefield weapon that is edged on both sides (unlike a projectile spear). It can be used to slash to either the right or the left, and just as he may today, a Japanese warrior in feudal society could cut both ways: for good or for evil." -Kyomi
