The Pilgrims Escape from Doubting Castle

A Drawing in Chromolithography
After a design by T. Stothard, R. A.

On stone by C Schacher, Edinburgh
W. H. Ms Farlane, Lith, Edinburgh

Pilgrim's Progress,
by John Bunyan,
Published 1864 by William Collins, Glasgow, Edinburgh, & London

This antique chromolithograph is taken from a disbound copy of one 'The Select works of John Bunyan, containing the Pilgrim's Progress.'

I bought this somewhat grungy book from a man who had kept his books in a dusty old garage. The outside of the book was very dirty and one corner had been nibbled, possibly by a rat! All the pages and plates from this book have a corner missing! However, the margins are unusually large so the print can easily be framed without showing the corner.

The print is single-sided (no text on the verso) and on medium-weight paper. The colour is fairly bright and the paper is only mildly age-toned on the margins. Overall in good condition, especially considering the age of the print - over 133 years old!

The second picture shows the print as it would look with a frame. The third picture shows the print as it is. The last picture shows the title page of the book from which the picture was rescued.

The size of the paper is 27 x 20 cm OR 11 x 8 ins, approximately.

The print will be packed securely in a card-backed envelope and posted by airmail if overseas.

Information on Chromolithography from Wikipedia:
'The initial technique involved the use of multiple lithographic stones, one for each color, and was still extremely expensive when done for the best quality results. Depending on the number of colors present, a chromolithograph could take months to produce, by very skilled workers....'

The prints in this book were probably printed with just a few stones as the colours are limited.
