Japanese Kokeshi dolls are beautiful and loaded with symbolism. These wooden cylindrical dolls with no arms or legs have been made in Japan for centuries, but it was only after WWII that this modern version of the doll became popular with western tourists. They are collected in multiples as there are many different styles and designs.

The smaller of the two kokeshi dolls is a Togatta kokeshi. Its distinguishing characteristics are a large head (in proportion to the body), red pattern that radiates from the top of her head, eye with pupil, and an inverted V nose. Togatta kokeshi measures about 7" tall and it is in great vintage condition.

The larger of the dolls is a Naruko kokeshi. Its distinguishing characteristics are a big head but proportioned to a tapered trunk decorated with a chrysanthemum pattern. The head has been attached to the base in such a way that it allows it to turn sideways, making a particular sound (cry) that is unique to the Naruko kokeshi. Doll measures about 9 3/4" tall and it is in great vintage condition.
