Reindeer Moss (Cladonia rangiferina) is a type of lichen that grows in alpine tundra and is eaten by reindeer. It also has a very cool branching pattern when you look at it under magnification, which is more to the point of why I painted it : )

This painting was made using a batik-type technique. I used masking fluid, a kind of runny version of rubber cement, to draw the pattern, then painted over it with watercolor. When it was all dry, I removed the mask to reveal the white of the paper. Then I went over the white with a very light wash of blue for a more subtle look.
