Splendid in caramel glass, this rooster dish looks good enough to eat. At home with other depression ware heirlooms it complements country and diner decors while looking absolutely shabby chic; pair it with modern pieces and its deco heritage shines through, adding sly panache.

Details: This version of the covered rooster dish by the L. E. Smith glass company has a different character from the familiar Westmoreland version. It has greater feather detail and the tail and other features are more stylized. The bird also has a somewhat prouder appearance. Made from less common caramel glass (often called slag glass), it has a warm rich color with swirls of creamy white and tan; unlike milk glass or jadeite—which tend to be completely opaque and are of consistent hue—caramel glass has areas which are alternately more or less translucent, giving it a beautiful depth of tone.

NOTE: This dish in not a reproduction, it is an original.

CONDITION: Very Good, with no chips or cracks. There is a definite makers mark, and also one short hairline fissure likely dating from its original manufacture resulting from the cooling glass on the underside of the base which is only visible upon close inspection (picture five) and does not in any way affect display.

SIZE: 8” high, by about 5.5” wide and 3.25” deep.

CIRCA: 1930s-1940s

SHIPPING: Because this item is breakable, the shipping costs automatically include insurance.
